About Terra Lime Heritage

My name is Kyle Henderson, a British-trained traditional lime craftsman and the founder of Terra Lime Heritage.

Terra Lime Heritage was established to bring authentic, traditional lime craftsmanship to heritage and older buildings across NSW and Australia. The focus is on working with buildings as they were intended to function, using time-tested lime methods that allow masonry walls to breathe, manage moisture naturally, and age with integrity.

I am UK-trained in traditional lime work, with my foundations formed in my home land of the Lake District — one of the most demanding heritage environments in the world. This background shapes the way I approach every project, from initial assessment through to completed work.

Training in the Lake District with Brad O’Leary

My traditional lime training and hands-on experience were gained working under Brad O’Leary of Lake District Property Renovator, a widely respected name in heritage building conservation and traditional lime craftsmanship.

During this time, I worked on historic farmhouses, cottages, terraces, churches, and domestic buildings, including properties dating back to the 1600s.

These projects required a deep understanding of traditional construction, correct lime mortar use, and how moisture behaves within older masonry buildings.

The Lake District’s challenging climate — high rainfall, cold conditions, and persistent damp — provided invaluable experience in applying breathable lime systems under real-world conditions. This environment reinforced the importance of correct material choice and traditional methods in maintaining the long-term health of historic buildings.

Applying Traditional Lime Methods in Australia

After relocating to Australia to be with my partner, I began working for a company on traditional and older masonry buildings. During this time, it became clear to me that not all practices described as “traditional” or “heritage” aligned with the conservation-led standards I had been trained in while working in the UK.

I founded Terra Lime Heritage to offer an approach rooted firmly in proper traditional lime methods, one that prioritises breathability, material compatibility, and respect for older buildings. My aim is to apply lime only where it is appropriate, using methods that support the long-term health and character of the building rather than short-term outcomes.

I now work with traditional lime plastering, lime rendering, lime pointing, and limewashing across NSW and Australia, assessing each project individually to ensure the correct approach is taken with care and restraint.

A Conservation-Led Approach

My approach is conservation-led rather than solution-driven. Lime is not presented as a cure-all for damp, but as part of a broader understanding of how traditional buildings manage moisture. Consideration is always given to other contributing factors such as ventilation, drainage, ground levels, and general maintenance.

Modern cement-based materials are avoided on older masonry wherever possible, as they can restrict breathability and contribute to long-term deterioration.

Who I Work With

I work with homeowners, architects, and heritage consultants who want to care for their buildings properly and make informed decisions about how they are repaired using lime.

Most of my work is on older buildings, I want to work for those seeking a thoughtful, traditional approach to lime work.

Projects are considered on an individual basis, and selected work is undertaken Australia-wide depending on scope and suitability. What matters most is a shared respect for the building and a willingness to do the work in a way that supports its long-term health and character.

Why Terra Lime Heritage

Terra Lime Heritage represents a commitment to careful, informed workmanship grounded in traditional practice. The methods and principles learned through working in the UK’ guide every project, prioritising respect for old buildings, proper use of lime, and long-term building health over short-term fixes.

For those seeking traditional lime work carried out with understanding and integrity, Terra Lime Heritage offers a considered, craft-led approach.
