Lime Render

This collection showcases traditional lime rendering carried out on historic buildings ranging from the 17th century through to the 19th century, including cottages, terraces, churches, and larger heritage properties. Each project reflects an approach rooted in traditional practice, with materials and finishes selected to suit the building’s age, exposure, and construction.

Rendering was undertaken using traditional lime mixes, including hot lime, combined with well-graded aggregates, sands, and natural fibres such as horse hair where appropriate. Mixes were adjusted on site to suit conditions, exposure, and substrate, allowing each wall to be treated individually rather than applying a uniform approach.

Care was taken at every stage, from preparation through to finishing. Traditional tools and methods were used to ensure compatibility with historic masonry and to achieve finishes appropriate to the building.

A range of traditional finishes are represented, including harl, wet dash, roughcast, open-poured, and ashlar-style finishes, selected to provide suitable weather protection while maintaining breathability and historic character.

All work was carried out using traditional lime materials and methods appropriate to the age and condition of each building, with close attention paid to curing, carbonation, and long-term performance.
