Lime Pointing
This collection features traditional lime pointing carried out on historic masonry buildings ranging from the 17th to the 19th century, including cottages, terraces, churches, and larger heritage structures. Each project was approached with an understanding that mortar joints play a critical role in the long-term performance of traditional masonry.
Pointing was undertaken using traditional lime mortars, including hot lime mixes, combined with carefully selected sands and aggregates suited to the strength and permeability of the original brick or stone. All mortars were mixed on site, allowing adjustments to be made based on exposure, substrate, and environmental conditions.
Failed or inappropriate modern mortars were carefully removed using hand tools to protect surrounding masonry. Joints were finished using traditional techniques, with close attention given to compaction, texture, and joint profile to ensure compatibility with the original construction.
Throughout the curing and carbonation process, the work was protected and maintained to support a slow, controlled set, helping to ensure the mortar performs as intended over time.
